This is my catalogue of Feminist Zine Pirate zines. If you are interested in acquiring any of the
following, email me: davidsontonya[at]yahoo.comIn my zine, Feminist Zine Pirate, I pirated from my collection my favourite material, insightful
articles, touching artwork, which I couldn’t let stay sequestered in my basement apartment and
compiled a series of zines centered on various topics. I similarly want to lure you into the feminist
zine world; it is a reading and an exhibition. This research is couched in a larger project in which I looked more specifically at how third-wave
feminists were rearticulating feminism specifically in relation to sexualities, race, masculinities,
media, humour etc.Why do I feel I can study this underground subculture in academia? Is this not the ultimate form
of piracy? Why do I think I can codify and contain such an eclectic form of expression in a soc-
iology masters thesis? Because, in accordance with Stephen Duncombe, “I believe that what zine-
sters have to say and what zines represent are too important to stay sequestered within the
walls of a subcultural ghetto” (1997: 16).These zines are almost entirely pirated material. And pirating (sharing in ultra-friendly terms) is
central to renegade zinester culture. I like the term for it’s punch, but it is not entirely accurate.
The pirating is a much more friendly form of sharing and putting into print once again images or
texts I found inspiring.
