“Photography is a mode of bereavement. It speaks to us of mortification. Even though it remains
unthought, the essential relation between death and language flashes up before us in the photo-
graphic image” (Cadava 1992: 90). Photography is liminal and also performative. Photography is
liminal in that it captures moments between time; present instantly becomes the past. In this
photo key, where little girls in the photo are known by their maiden and married name, past, pre-
sent and future are confused. This wedding photo, in intergenerational translation, also exists
across other times. This photograph is performative in that it inspires the continual working up
of memories. Antze and Lambek write that "memory is reconstructed anew each time through
secular rituals...The position of the viewer may be left in question or explicitly positioned, but
there is always a space, a distance, between the spectator and her memory" (in Shields 2003:
39). This photo became a visiting Oma and Opa ritual. Take the photo off the wall, point and ask,
'was this the postman's son?' 'this is Mrs. Fittler who used to give me gum?'. Memory is per-
formed and translated through the photograph.1. Franz Pimiskern
